The government will takes measures to ensure Kayin State gets the electricity supply it needs and a budget to that effect has been planned, said Kyaw Win, Union Minister for Planning and Finance, at a November 24 ceremony at the Kayin State Investment Fair-2017.
“As it is now the start of the season, we need to work to fulfill all requirements,” said the minister.
He said the investment law has given equal opportunity to both local and foreign investors. A reliable supply of power is vital for Kayin State’s development, he added.
To provide electricity nationwide, Myanmar relies mainly on hydropower and power plants fuelled by gas or coal.
The amount of power generated by hydroelectric stations increased by 6 per cent in 2016 and 4 per cent in 2015. This year is likely to see another increase.
The generation rate of for gas- and coal-fired power projects increased by 28 per cent in 2015, 21 per cent in 2016 and 12-14 per cent in 2017.
The total electricity generation rate increased 13 per cent in 2015, 12 per cent in 2016 and 13 per cent in 2017.
Myanmar’s electricity consumption reached its highest level on November 21 this year with a total amount of 3,189 megawatts.
