Myanmar needs great educational strength in the world so that it can become a nation with dignity as powerful countries try to influence the world, said State Counsellor Aung San Suu Kyi.
The remarks of the State Counsellor came in an address she delivered at a conference on the theme of Educational Development Implementation in Nay Pyi Taw on December 8.
“Education is important not only for a person, but for a country,” Aung San Suu Kyi said. “Our country needs to nurture a great number of educated persons to be able to stand tall among the nations of the world.
“In the current age, almost all the people know the powerful countries dominate the world. For that reason, our country must try to be powerful in the world. What we mean by ‘powerful’ is education. Only with educational strength can we have economic and social strengths.”
She sad the country must place emphasis on the basic education sector.
Teachers should note the importance of the future of the country and its citizens.
“The objectives of Myanmar’s basic education sector are to create learning opportunities, to prevent students leaving schools, to continue pursuing vocational education or higher education through the middle and high school levels and to help students conduct basic research work and develop in various fields,” Aung San Suu Kyi said.
“To be able to meet with these objectives, the KG+12 educational system is to be reformed at the basic education level. The students and their teachers need to spend more hours at school hours than previously.
“The ‘by-heart’ system should be changed into rationalisation-based system so that we can reduce the high rate of dropping out. Education colleges should be upgraded for ensuring that teachers’ efficiency is boosted.
“Subject refresher courses should be continuously available to teachers. Syllabuses and prescribed textbooks should be also upgraded. Educational management capacity should also be geared up,” Aung San Suu Kyi said.
She said the “learn-by-heart” (rote) system, which has been rooted for years in the country, must be changed into a reasoning-based system. Syllabuses must strengthen the way of thinking of the individual child and help children develop good habits and morality.
Children should be trained have a healthy body and spirit, and teachers play a role of great importance in making this come true, Aung San Suu Kyi said.
