The FINANCIAL — The Asian Development Bank (ADB) has appointed Newin Sinsiri as its new Country Director for Myanmar.
Mr. Sinsiri will lead ADB operations in Myanmar and supervise the effective implementation of ADB’s Country Partnership Strategy, which aims to help the country achieve sustainable and inclusive economic growth and job creation for poverty reduction by improving connectivity, strengthening human capital, and promoting reforms, according to ADB.
“ADB has an extensive partnership with Myanmar,” said Mr. Sinsiri. “My priority is to work closely with the people of Myanmar, the government, and development partners to help the country reduce poverty and ensure sustainable economic growth.”
Mr. Sinsiri joined ADB in 1998 and has held several leadership positions and extensive experience working in Southeast Asia, South Asia, and East Asia in the areas of regional cooperation, finance sector development, infrastructure development, and capacity building. Prior to this appointment, he served as president of the Neighboring Countries Economic Development Cooperation Agency of Thailand.
He holds a master of business administration degree from Chulalongkorn University in Thailand and a bachelor of engineering (electronics) degree from King Mongkut’s Institute of Technology in Lardkrabang. He undertook his postgraduate studies in international finance at Keio University in Tokyo, Japan.
Mr. Sinsiri replaces the outgoing Country Director Winfried Wicklein, who served in Myanmar from 2014, and is now the Country Director for Indonesia.
Myanmar has been a member country of ADB since 1973. To date, ADB has provided the country with over $2.9 billion in public and private sector loans, technical assistance, and grants. Future ADB operations will focus on infrastructure development (energy, transport, and urban and water services), education and training, rural development, as well as regional cooperation and private sector development.
