Agreement for Hanthawady airport close to signing

An agreement appears in the offing as the coordination committee for the Hanthawady International Airport construction project heads into its sixth meeting with the tender-winning company optimistic that they could emerge with a contract.

Coordinated efforts are being made to get moving on the project for an international airport in Bago Region.

The first week of January will see the sixth coordinating meeting between the committee and the company, according to the Ministry of Transport and Communications. The date for signing a contract is expected to be chosen in the meeting.

The committee and company signed a framework agreement in 2015. The airport construction reportedly depends on ODA loans and such loans will be received only after coordination.

“Once the project starts in 2018, it will finish in 2020 because it is a five-year project. This project will be implemented at a national level,” said Deputy Minister Kyaw Myo.

The project is expected to reduce traffic congestion in Yangon city. As the Hanthawady Airport is far from Yangon, both car and train routes are expected to be built.

The airport needs to meet international standards on par with other Asian airports. The Ministry of Transport and Communications will supervise the project, with the Bago Region government responsible for beautifying the areas surrounding the airport.
