Electrical consumption in Myanmar has increased to about 16 per cent on average and the government aims to complete five power projects in the 2018-19 fiscal year, said Dr Tun Naing, deputy minister for electricity and energy during a parliament session held on January 15.
The deputy minister replied to a question raised by MP Nay Myo Htet of Kyauktada Constituency about whether the government has plans to supply more electricity to meet the increasing demand of electricity from 2018 to 2021.
“When we reviewed about annual electric consuming rate from 2010-11 to 2016-17, the consuming rate was increased from 15 per cent to 16 per cent annually. In November 2017, the consuming rate increased to the highest rate and reached to 3,189 megawatts. The government is implementing five electric power projects to finish in 2018-19 to meet the demand of electricity.
“The five electric power projects are Yazajo four-megawatt hydropower project, Minbu 40-megawatt solar power project, Thaton 119-megawatt natural gas power project, Thaketa 106-megawatt natural gas power project and Myingyan 225-megawatt natural gas power project,” said Dr Tun Naing.
He said the government is implementing to have a total of 3,610 megawatts from 2019-20 to 2021-22 from electric power projects such as upper Kyaitaung 51-megawatt hydropower project, upper Yeywar 280-megawatt hydropower project, Kyaukphu 135-megawatt natural gas power project, Ahlon 356-megawatt natural gas power project, Kanpauk (first phase) 615-megawatt natural gas power project, Ywarma 150-megawatt natural gas power project, Pahtoelon 12-megawatt natural gas power project, Myanaung 20-megawatt natural gas power project, Thilawa 108-megawatt power project and Milaungchai 1,390-megawatt natural gas power project.
The government aims to complete the power projects using the state budget, foreign loans and investment from the private sector, he said.
