YRTA’s school bus program to be launched in coming academic year

YANGON – The school buses being purchased by Yangon will be running on June 1 of the coming academic year, said Dr Maung Aung, Secretary of Yangon Region Transport Authority (YRTA).

“We are going to hold a kick-off ceremony soon to talk to bus drivers,” said Maung Aung.

“The school buses will include CCTV and GPS systems so that parents can monitor their children when they are on the bus, whether their children arrived, after adding an app to their phones. It is the international standard.”

Maung Aung said light trucks would no longer be used and they are planning to entice parents to send their children to school on a school bus rather than driving them. For that to work, “the buses must be tidy and safe,” he said.

The plan will be rolled out starting on June 1 of the coming academic year, with buses serving four schools in Yangon. The programme could not be launched this year due to delays on the part of the school-bus company.

A signing ceremony over the purchase of school buses was held last May 10 between the regional government committee and the Korea Trade-Investment Promotion Agency and Posco Daewoo Corporation, according to Chief Minister Phyo Min Thein’s Facebook page.

Nilar Kyaw, minister for Electric Power, Industries and Transport in the Yangon region government said at the 5th Yangon Region Parliament that the Yangon regional government committee had spent over 10 billion kyat to purchase 200 school buses.

Because the company operating the school bus fleet could not continue doing so because it was losing money, the YRTA will subsidise the service, said Nilar Kyaw.

The Yangon Region Government Committee formed Shwelet Company, which was given a green light to operate the buses.
