Myaungmya – Ayeyawady region will get a large liquefied natural gas (LNG) power plant by 2020, able to supply electricity to the region and beyond.
The Supreme Company will build a 1,390 megawatt power plant in the area, the largest ever constructed in Ayeyawady region. The project’s first phase is expected to be finished within 36 months, with the second phase completed six months later.
The region now has a power plant in Myanaung capable of generating 12 or 13MW, said Win Htay, region minister for electricity, transport and industry.
“We are considering naming the power plant ‘Shwe Thaungyan’,” he said, noting the project was initiated by the Union government, with the union government supporting it.
“If the project is finished, it will benefit our region,” said Win Htay. “The region government decided to support the project soon after it took the oath of office.”
The electricity generated from the power plant will be sent to Atote sub-power station and supply electricity in the region, he said. The project will see power lines reaching to Hlaingthayar Township in Yangon region.
“We are still calculating the unit cost and investment,” he said, adding that the natural gas would be imported from overseas.
According to a plan to supply electricity across the country by 2030, up to 7,934 villages in the region are in need of connection to the national power grip.
