Yangon home to over 300 karaoke places

Yangon Region has more than 300 karaoke places, according to a cabinet minister.

Karen ethnic affairs minister Naw Pan Thinzar Myo revealed the information February 7 to a Yangon regional parliamentary session in reply to MP Kyi Pyar from Kyauktada Township who asked for the exact number of the businesses and the fees they pay for their licences.

The minister said the region had 326 karaoke places as of January 1 and the government charged an initial 30,000 kyat per machine, and 20,000 kyat to extend the licence.

The government collected 41.1 million kyat from new licences and renewals between April and December, said the minister, and expected to collect nearly 54.8 million kyat by the end of fiscal year 2017-18.

The karaoke business is regulated by the Television and Video Law from 1996.

A regional-level committee adopted 17 rules for approving and rejecting karaoke licences in August 2000, said Naw Pan Thinzar Myo.

The committee will next send its assessment to the Yangon Region government for final approval.
