Taninthayi govt seeks upgrade of Dawei airport

The regional government of Taninthayi will submit a proposal to upgrade Dawei airport to the Union Government.

The officials of Hithar Group Holdings Co and Bangkok Aviation Services Enterprise (BASE) explained matters relating to the project of upgrading Dawei airport to Taninthayi officials at the office of regional government on February 6. The regional government has a plan to upgrade the airport and to submit the proposal, the Union Government’s Minister for Electric Power and Energy, Kyi Hlaing, said.

“As far as I know, proposals of upgrading Kawthoung, Mawlamyine and Heho airports have been submitted to the Union Government. Regarding the Dawei airport, a company told us to participate in the tender bidding and its profile. We will have to urge the Union Government. We can’t know the Union Government how to handle the proposal,” Kyi Hlaing said.

“It was learnt that the Union Government previously invited tenders to upgrade Kawthoung airport. If Dawei airport is upgraded, it is not easy to say what time the project starts as the Union Government handles it.”

There are 69 airports in Myanmar. There are 31 domestic airports and three international airports totaling 34. Seven of them share flight services together with the air force of Tatmadaw (defence services). The Union Government invited tenders of upgrading Kawthoung, Heho and Mawlamyine airports at the end of last year.

Dawei airport is 12,000 feet long and 100 feet wide. It has a total area of 364.677 acres. Five planes can stop in the airport at the same time. The durability of the runaway is 873,000 lbs, and planes as large as an Airbus 320 can land there.
