Hlaingthayar, Thanlyin Hospitals to upgrade to teaching hospitals

YANGON- With the aim to nurture qualified postgraduate doctors and house surgeons, the government will upgrade Hlaingthayar and Thanlyin general hospitals as teaching hospitals, according to the Ministry of Health and Sports.

The hospitals, located in Yangon’s outskirts, are known for treating many injuries caused by traffic-accidents.

The two hospitals are being expanded, with new emergency wards, x-ray rooms, laboratories, operating theatres, and delivery wards. The upgrade includes new buildings in the hospital compounds.

According to the health ministry’s data, over 9 million patients received treatment at hospitals across the country in 2016. Over 2.5 million had severe conditions.

With the number of patients now increasing yearly, public hospitals are again undergoing upgrades. The government is now upgrading hospitals situated in the Yangon Region, including Thanlyin, Hlaingthayar, Insein, North Oakkalapa and Thingangyun hospitals. Spending on support equipment and staffing for emergency rescue operations is also on the increase.

Yangon Region now boasts 83 hospitals providing 11,435 beds, divided between 14 specialist hospitals, three teaching hospitals, two 500-bed hospitals, four 200-bed hospitals, a 100-bed hospital, 11 each of 50- and 25-bed hospitals as well as four 16-bed hospitals and 33 station hospitals.

In the whole country, there are 9,083 rural health branches and 1,778 rural health departments. In related news, the health ministry, regional authorities and MPs are planning a public education campaign to change people’s driving habits, as well as increasing enforcement against those who violate the traffic laws.
