Direct flights begin between Myeik Airport and Bangkok

The Bangkok-based airline, New Gen Airways has begun direct flights between the Myeik Airport and Don Mueang International Airport in the Thai capital in cooperation with its local partner Tun Htaik Tin Company, a senior airline official told The Myanmar Times.

U Thar Du, New Gen Airways’ country manager said the regular flights started on Friday.

“Until now, passengers from Tanintharyi Region needed to go Yangon to catch a flight to Bangkok. So some people from the region requested a direct air link between Bangkok and Myeik,” he said.

“Myeik has a very strong potential as a major tourism destination, which is why we started this route,” he added.

New Gen Airways will serve the route three times a week with Boeing 737-400s, which can accommodate up to 150 passengers.

The airfare will cost US$180 (K240,840) for a return ticket, U Thar Du said.

According to Tanintharyi’s Hotel and Tourism Department, almost 350,000 visitors passed though the border crossing in 2017.

Most of travellers are from Thailand.

Tourism and travel executives noted that local travellers have opted to go to Tanintharyi Region in the recent years, especially in Dawei, Myeik and Kawthaung, and visit its beautiful islands and ancient pagoda towns.

“We hope for success in this new route. Most people from Tanintharyi are going to Bangkok for medical treatment or education.

“This initiative will support the development of the region,” U Thar Du said.

The immigration department is already setting up equipment and other facilities for the convenience of international travellers at the Myeik airport.

U Ye Htut Aung, deputy director general of the Department of Civil Aviation, said that the New Gen Airways was allowed to open the route through a charter flight arrangement with its local partner.

“Allowing the direct charter flight from a non-international airport to link with other countries will increase foreign visitors to Myanmar,” he said.

The government is planning to upgrade Kawthaung Airport to handle more international flights as tourist arrivals have increased in the region over the past few years.

According to DCA, four companies are interested in bidding for the upgrade of Kawthaung Airport.

“We are preparing to upgrade three domestic airports: Kawthaung Airport in Tanintharyi, Heho Airport in Shan and Mawlamyaing Airport in Mon,” U Ye Htut Aung said.

“We have four companies bidding for the work at Kawthaung Airport, two companies at Mawlamyaing and three at Heho.

“We will invite tenders after finishing a request for the proposal process,” he added.
