Mandalay to continue Thingyan market

The Thingyan market, which offers shopping and entertainment to visitors, was such a success in Mandalay last year that it will continue this year.

A countryside Thingyan night market (Taw Thingyan nya zay) will also be opened, according to the Mandalay City Development Committee.

The countryside Thingyan night market will be held on 66th between 19th and 16th streets in Mandalay city during the festivities. Passers-by will enjoy traditional food from rural areas, Thingyan movies on a large screen and puppet shows, said U Kyaw San Myint of the committee.

“The Thingyan market got a lot of attention. This year, we will add the countryside Thingyan night market for festival-goers both day and night. At the night market, rural snacks will be sold and we will provide electricity along the street. People will be be able to see entertainment as well,” said U Kyaw San Myint.

To ensure cleanliness and healthy food is sold at the event, the committee will cooperate with the Restaurant Owners Association and allow all shops to operate free of charge. Yi Myint Motion Picture Production will show movies on a large screen at night.

Last year’s Thingyan festival banned all vehicles and motorcycles along 26th from 78th to 66th streets.
