Although there have been more than 900 hotel rooms along the Ngapali Beach in Thandwe, Rakhine State, decreased number of visitors made the average occupancy rate decline by 11 percent in 2017 compared to the previous year, according to a property report (2017) published by Colliers International (Myanmar) based in Canada.
Last year saw only 42 percent of hotel occupancy and the report claims political issues surrounding Rakhine State had impacted the occupancy rate.
However, the report also claimed that despite some foreign reservation cancellations, the beach resort still sees both local and foreign visitors. With more free independent tourists and local visitors coming to the beach, mid-range hotels have better prospects.
Occupancy rate increased at Pristine Mermaid Resort, Jasmine Ngapali Resort and Art of Sand Resort last year.
The Ngapali beach sees most visitors in the period between November and January. During high season, hotel room occupancy rate is from 83 percent to 100 percent. In low season, the rate is only from 30 percent to 40 percent.
Hotel room rentals in 2017 were US$90-100 at two-star hotels, US$110-230 at three-star hotels and US$125-530 at four- and five-star hotels.
There are 20 hotels with over 900 rooms in a three kilometer radius of the Ngapali beach.
