Crackdown on idle land in industrial zones in Yangon intensifies

Yangon Region Government has collected the list of idle lands bought with the intention of manipulating land prices in some industrial zones in Yangon, said Nilar Kyaw, Yangon Region Minister for Electricity, Industry and Transport, at the 6th regular session of Yangon Region Parliament on March 16.

Regional MP Kyaw Kyaw Maung representing East Dagon Township Constituency-2 raised a question on whether there is a plan to reform the East Dagon Industrial Zone Committee.

There are 29 industrial zones in Yangon region. Since its inception, there is no precise industrial zone law, rules and regulations for the systematic establishment of industrial zones. Since then, the Directive No.1/97 is the only guideline to establish industrial zones, Nilar Kyaw added.

“As a result, industrial zones have no sufficient infrastructures. Water supply and power supply system and all works are unsystematic. Some people have bought land spaces in industrial zones in order to manipulate land prices. Many land spaces are idle. There are only fences and building on land spaces for show,” she continued.

The region government has formed the Industrial Zone Upgrading Supervisory Committee to upgrade 29 industrial zones. Zone Committee will be reformed in relevant industrial zones. As a pilot project, we have started implementing it in South Dagon Industrial Zone where there is no squatters, she said.
