Mandalay toughens up on illegal entry of foreigners

The Mandalay regional government will dispatch mobile teams in its key cities in an effort to curb the illegal entry of foreigners, a senior regional minister said.

U Myo Thit, regional minister of Resource and Environmental Conservation, said the teams of officials from the Immigration Department, Customs Department and law enforcement agencies will be deployed at entry and exit places in Mandalay cities.

He said all foreigners entering the region will have to fill out forms, which will be sent to township immigration offices. House owners or hotel operators who fail to inform the government about foreigners living in their places will be sanctioned according to the law.

“All foreigners have to apply to the regional government where they are going to settle, and the regional government will instruct the regional immigration department to review the applications,” said U Myo Thit.

He said the mobile teams will also conduct random inspections up to four times a month in townships in Mandalay.

“Some (foreigners) are doing business illegally while staying in Mandalay so Myanmar people are losing jobs. People are illegally entering Mandalay city in different ways. I want to know how the government will take action on these cases,” said U Aung Kyaw Moe, a regional parliament member.

Tourists are not allowed to visit Thabeikkyin and Mogok townships unless they have a permit.
