Kaplan to open first wholly-owned campus in Yangon

Kaplan Myanmar University College, a subsidiary of US educational program provider Kaplan Inc, will open its campus on Pyay Road, Yangon, on June 28.

The Kaplan campus in Yangon will offer University Degree programmes, Professional Certifications, MBA Programmes and short courses.

Daw Khine Khine Lin, principal of Kaplan Myanmar University College, told The Myanmar Times, the institution is targeting 1,000 students within one year. It is also planning to open new Kaplan campuses in other Myanmar cities within three years.

“Our aim is to equip Myanmar students with credentials and qualifications from an internationally recognised education provider,” she said.

The principal declined to reveal the amount invested by Kaplan in its Yangon campus ahead of its official launch. The Myanmar Times understands though that the campus will be wholly-owned by Kaplan Inc.

The move comes after the Myanmar Investment Commission (MIC) in April permitted foreigners to make full capital investments in private schools in the country.

International service providers are now able to make investments in basic education schools, technical, vocational and training schools, higher education schools, subject-based schools and private schools designated by the Ministry of Education.

It also comes after the US government this year classified Myanmar’s education sector as the industry with the best prospects for investors, according to the 2018 Oxford Business Group report.

Ko Thaw Zin Aung Gyi, founder of Capstone Education, said he expects further growth in the Myanmar education sector following the MIC’s decision.

“It is encouraging that more educational institutions and organisations are coming to Myanmar, as “this will give students and young people more opportunities to learn what they are passionate about and pursue their interests.”

Capstone Education helps students in Myanmar prepare for an overseas university education in the US or UK.
