New bus stops to give Yangon much needed facelift

FMIDecaux has commenced construction of a slew of new bus stops in Yangon, U Maung Aung, secretary of the Yangon Region Transport Authority (YRTA) said this week. The first of these bus stops, located near Myanmar Plaza, is already complete and open to the public.

FMIDecaux, which is cooperating with the Yangon City Development Committee (YCDC), will build a total of 350 bus stops for a total investment of $13 million. “The government will also be involved in relocating the new bus stops,” said U Maung Aung.

FMIDecaux is a joint venture between first Myanmar Investment Co, which is listed on the Yangon Stock Exchange and advertising company JCDecaux Asia(S). YCDC has granted FMIDecaux exclusive rights to advertise at the 500 bus stops for a period of 20 years.

FMI will hold a 40 percent stake in the JV, while JC Decaux will hold the remaining 60pc.

The first contract in Myanmar will cover the design, installation, operation and maintenance of 500 brand new bus shelters equipped with USB ports and LED screens displaying the Estimated Time of Arrival for public buses. It will also include Yangon city information signboards and drinking fountains, according to FMIDecaux.

All downtown bus shelters will be replaced within 18 months.

Importantly, the move will help give Yangon a much needed facelift as the new bus stops gradually replace many older ones. ‘’Because of this new bus stop project, we will need to move some old bus stops elsewhere,” said U Maung Aung.

‘’This agreement will be the first of its kind in Yangon. The cooperation of FMI and JCDecaux can support the development and help the modernisation of Yangon after transforming the public transportation buses,” Yangon chief minister U Phyo Min Thein said earlier this year.
