Directorate of Telecommunications instruct import of Unicode handsets

Directorate of Telecommunications has instructed handset importers to import Unicode support handsets, said its deputy director general Myo Swe.

At the present, mobile phone users are mostly using Zawgyi code support handsets as it is easy for them to use.

“We told the companies to import handsets that can support Unicode system as it is used as a standard font internationally. Only Myanmar is using two font systems in handsets: Unicode and Zawgyi. We instructed the importers like that as we will use the Unicode system later,” he said.

The Directorate of Telecommunications is planning to implement e-Government system and it is setting policy to use Unicode system in line with international standards which are conformity with government departments.
