Nyaungshwe MPs reject proposal to construct hotel on floating island

TAUNGGYI- Four MPs including Inn Ethnic Affairs Minister Dr Tun Hlaing rejected a proposal to build hotel on the 90 acres wide of natural floating island belonging to the Department of Forestry in Mongthauk region, Nyaungshwe Township, Southern Shan State.

The proposal was submitted by Myanmar Naing Groups.

“We, all MPs from Nyaungshwe Township, denied the proposal. The Inn Ethnic Affairs Minister signed it. We presented it with over 1,600 petitions against the hotel construction proposal on the floating island. The signatures were obtained from their own volition. We are now compiling more signatures. We also submitted petitions against the proposal to the President. The 90 acres wide floating island had been cancelled from the vacant and virgin land type in 2011. The Inle Lake is an inland freshwater lake. Likewise, it provides a habitat for migratory (winter) birds. All Inn nationals are going to deny hotel construction project in the Inle Lake because we need to conserve the Inle Lake. Moreover, Inle Lake is owned by Myanmar as a whole and a World Heritage site. If the hotel mega project was to be built, the lake will be damaged.. In my opinion, the project shouldn’t be implemented. Over 600 acres of lands had been permitted at the Hotel Zone. We urged entrepreneurs to build hotels within the hotel zone,” said MP Khin Maung Win from Nyaungshwe Constituency.

Complaints against the hotel construction proposal being implemented on 90 acres wide floating island were sent to the President, the State Counsellor and Union Parliamentary committees on August 9th.

Mongthauk residents also said that those carrying out Corporate Social Responsibility services for the hotel tried to persuade locals to agree to the construction. They had also reportedly tried to collect signatures for the construction project to be given the go-ahead.
