New bridge linking Mingalar Taung Nyunt and Dawbon to open next year

A new bridge that will link Mingalar Taung Nyunt and Dawbon townships will be opened early next year, the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) said.

The New Tharketa bridge over Pazundaung Creek will be completed in February, JICA said in a statement.

The construction of the bridge cost 3.36 billion yen (K41.88 billion). It is funded by JICA as a token of friendship and cooperation between Japan and Myanmar.

The four lane extradosed-type bridge spans 253 metres and is much stronger than the 47-year-old Thaketa bridge. It will be the first extradosed bridge in Myanmar.

To implement the project, JICA signed an agreement with the Ministry of Construction in June 2014 for a 35-month construction period. The project is now 60 percent completed.

After the completion of the construction of the new bridge, the old bridge will be demolished, according to U Nay Aung Ye Myint, deputy director of bridge development at the Ministry of Construction.

The current bridge is 47 years old and its strength has decreased because of the increase in traffic in the area, so a new one needs to be built, he said.

The project is part of the Greater Yangon development project aimed at improving the country’s commercial capital road network and ease the traffic in the city, JICA said.
