Yangon Region seeks to give historic train warehouse a second life

The Yangon regional government has asked the government for money to renovate the 1906 War Tan train warehouse, said Daw Nilar Kyaw, regional minister of Electricity, Transportation and Communication.

She told parliament on Thursday the request was included in the budget proposal for fiscal year 2019.

“It is a historical building, so we and the Yangon Heritage Trust will supervise and conduct the renovation,” the minister said.

She said the regional government asked for K70.679 million (US$43,462) in the budget in order request to undertake “heavy maintenance” of the train warehouse.

U San Kyaw, MP for Seikkan township in Yangon, asked the regional government to immediately start work on the historical building as it is in poor condition.

“It needs a lot of work, as the building is decaying and is in dangerous condition,” said U San Kyaw.

He showed photos of the roof of the staff living quarters, which is full of holes and covered with waterproof canvass to stop water coming in when it rains.

The ceilings and ladders of the building are also decaying, U San Kyaw said.

The train warehouse, which is under the supervision of the Ministry of Transportation and Communication, is used for the transportation of goods from Yangon to Mandalay and Myitkyina.

It is located near Yahmonenar and Wartan roads in Seikkan.
