Myanmar to establish high security laboratory, animal research centre next year

Myanmar will establish a high security laboratory- BSL 3 and a building where animals will be kept for research in 2019, according to the Ministry of Health and Sports.

The projects will be implemented with 5 million euro in aid provided by EU and 22 million euro loaned from AFD.

In cooperation with Myanmar’s National Health Laboratory, AFD and partner organizations will start tasks in 2019 for building a high security laboratory-BSL 3 and an animal research building, renovating National Health Laboratory in Yangon and Public Health Laboratory in Mandalay and promotion of research and technology at the laboratories. In order to carry out aforementioned tasks, a memorandum of understanding was signed in June this year.

The building of health facilities will start in 2019 and capacity building efforts for local staffs will begin in earlier 2019. Plans are underway to sign an agreement between National Health Laboratory under the Ministry of Health and Sports and Foundation Merieux and Institut Pasteur. Blueprin and work plans have been submitted to the ministry.

The ministry was allotted a budget of K1.5 billion for research work in 2018-2019 fiscal year, K1 billion for research in 2017-2018 fiscal year and K500 million in 2018 mini-budget period (from April to September).
