Truck company sets sights on 200-unit target this year

Although Myanmar’s economic situation has been slow of late, truck company Mitsubishi Fuso Truck and Bus is targeting sales of 200 heavy vehicles locally this year, said Daw Aye Win Tun, sales manager for commercial vehicles for FUSO.

The company first entered the local market with its range of light, medium, and heavy trucks in 2014 and now has showrooms and service centres in Yangon and Mandalay.

FUSO manufactures a range of commercial vehicles with capacities from 3.5 tonnes to 49 tonnes, passenger buses and other kinds of commercial vehicles buses. It currently has about 50 models ranging in price from US$28,000 up to US$130,000. The vehicles sold in Myanmar are assembled in Japan and India.

“Under the current situation, we are trying to catch up with our target. We aim increase sales 20 percent every year. This year, we hope to sell about 200 units for FUSO commercial trucks,” said Daw Aye Win Tun.

FUSO vehicles are distributed by Cycle and Carriage Myanmar, which also distributes Mercedes Benz and Mazda passenger vehicles, as well as FUSO commercial vehicles.

Cycle and Carriage Myanmar itself is a joint venture with International Beverages Trading Co Ltd, the biggest alcohol producer and distributor in Myanmar.

In the past, FUSO needed to compete with secondhand FUSO vehicles in market, but now, every brand new commercial vehicle is their competitor.

‘‘Now, all brand new commercial vehicles are competitors of FUSO because the government ended the imports of secondhand vehicles and most new commercial vehicles are imported from China, Japan and South Korea. Sales declined over the last two years and dropped the most in 2018. Businesses are spending less because of the economy and this has hit our sales,” said Daw Aye Win Tun.

Affirming its commitment to the local market the company is building a 4S showroom in Mingalardon Township, Yangon, which will offer sales, spare parts, after sale service and body painting at a single place. It is currently under construction and will be opened by the end of this year.

From now to February 15, 2019, FUSO is also offering maintenance for up to 200,000 kilometres for certain vehicles and special discounts starting from US$58,888. In addition to Chinese New Year Special Promotion, customers stand to participate in Cycle and Carriage 120th Anniversary Campaign to stand a chance to win a trip to Mongolia, Nepal and South Korea.

“There is a lot of potential in Myanmar. We are hoping more foreign investment will come. If the international investments come to Myanmar, it would be developed more not only in the vehicle market but also for other sectors and can create many job opportunities,” said Daw Aye Win Tun.
