Future Yangon as a town encircled by industrial zones: Chief Minister

The regional government is planning to build Yangon as a town circled by industrial zones and in the future, a big circular shaped city emerge, said Yangon Region Chief Minister Phyo Min Thein in a ceremony to open Hmawby-Taikkyi road, a portion of Yangon-Pyay Road held on February 10.

The opening ceremony was attended by Union Minister for Construction, Deputy Minister for Construction, Minister for Electricity, Industry and Transportation, MP of Taikkyi Constituency, MPs of the regional parliament and officials of the company which built the road.

“There are 33 townships in Yangon and 11 townships that encompass the town. Yangon Region has 45 townships and 44 of them are combined by the outer and inner boundaries of Yangon City Development Committee (YCDC). Kokogyun is a remote township in the region. We are implementing to develop industrial zones in 11 townships that will surround town. Taikkyi Township is included in the development plan. Hmawby Township is likely to be also developed. The regional government is planning to develop Kayan and Thongwa townships from Hlegu Township,” said the Chief Minister.

The Chief Minister continued that the authorities are planning to connect major cities across Myanmar with roads. They are building more roads that lead to East Dagon, West Dagon, South Dagon, North Dagon, South Oakkalapa, Thaketa and Kyimyindaing townships via Ngamoyeik Creep. They are also trying to connect with the opposite side of Kyimyindaing and are planning to develop projects at the opposite side of Kyimyindaing and Dala via downtown Yangon. Some projects are already underway in Thanlyin via Thaketa.

“We can soon travel to Dala from downtown easily and a special economic zone will be established in line with the development of Dala. We are trying to change location of ports in downtown areas to places closer to the sea. We are creating good opportunities to attract foreign investors. Yangon Investment Forum will be held in coming April and May. In doing so, the investors will come to Yangon to create job opportunities and developments in technology sector, said the Chief Minister.

The regional government can implement its plan through cooperation from the people. It cannot be done just with the public and/or private sector. All need to contribute to do to develop Yangon to become a charming economic hub, according to Phyo Min Thein.

He said, “The roads are important for the development of Yangon.”
