Myanmar to introduce rating system for hotels

Myanmar is planning to start a rating system for local hotels, according to the Ministry of Hotels and Tourism.

“The rating system will start in Yangon and be endorsed by the World Tourism Organisation. Rating hotels for their services is common in other countries,” said U Naing Win, a director at the ministry.

Having a rating system will encourage hotels in Myanmar to pay closer attention to the services they provide and raise the standard and quality of the hotel industry. Associations and hoteliers are now discussing a new rating program based on a star system, under which guests rate hotels by the number of stars.

The criteria will include the features and services a hotel should have. “Starting a star rating system is good. Guests can choose hotels according to the number of stars it has received from previous customers. There is an international standard for it and if Myanmar can implement this, it would be a big help for tourism,” said U Than Htut, executive director of Eden Group Company.

The star rating for hotels in Myanmar will be based on regional requirements and will be compatible with the country’s situation, said the Ministry of Hotels and Tourism.

Around 380 hotels and motels have been permitted to operate in Yangon, according to ministry data.
