Few food producers in Mandalay have proper certification: FDA

There are only about 100 food businesses that have received the approval of the Food and Drug Administration in Mandalay Region, said U San Win, chair of the Mandalay office of the Myanmar Food Processors and Exporters Association.

Although there are over 3000 food-related businesses in Mandalay, the number of business with FDA approval is still low, and the business owners need to follow the law, U San Win said. “The number of businesses that have FDA approval are only about 100. The owners of the businesses without certification need to be interested in improving their businesses. If they are not interested in it, we cannot do anything even if we share knowledge and technology,” he said.

According to Daw Ni Ni Aye, an official with the Department of Food and Drug Administration (Mandalay) only 110 enterprises, mainly bottled-water enterprises, edible-oil producers, and manufacturers of various types of food, have FDA certification. The conditions of the facilities, equipment and workforce of food-related businesses have to meet certain criteria to obtain certification from the FDA. For the water purification businesses, it can take about two months starting from the day of application to receive certification, and about three months for food products, Daw Ni Ni Aye said.

“The businesses need to have a clean environment, a good lighting system, proper drainage system, and clean floors and ceilings as well. Proper equipment is also necessary. Besides this, the employees should have thorough knowledge about handling and packaging food products, and their health reports are also required,” said Daw Ni Ni Aye.

After a successful application, a field inspection is conducted and certificates of approval are issued valid for one or two years.

“As purified water can be examined here in Mandalay, the checking process is quick, but for food products, samples must be sent to Nay Pyi Taw for examination. They cannot be handled in the laboratories here yet. So, more FDA facilities are being built, and the necessary equipment is being added. It’s expected that all the checking processes will be done in Mandalay in the coming years,” said Daw Ni Ni Aye.
