Yangon’s smart-parking tender to be out this month

The Yangon City Development Committee (YCDC) is setting out a tender for a smart-parking system this month in a move to curb indiscriminate parking that has often been blamed for the traffic woes of the country’s commercial capital.

The secretary of the road and bridge subcommittee of the YCDC, U Lin Khaing, said a tender would be called out this month for a smart-parking system to be built in six downtown townships of Yangon.

“We’ll approve the tender details next week and then invite interested bidders through newspapers. We’ll give the bidders four to six weeks to prepare their tender bids,” he said.

The Yangon Region government announced last year that an advanced parking system will be implemented to tackle the problem of the lack of parking space, which has been blamed for the daily traffic congestion in the city.

Yangon Chief Minister U Phyo Min Thein said in an August 3 press conference that “vehicle owners should not use the streets as a garage, that is why a smart-parking system will be implemented”.

The YCDC said should the smart-parking system to be implemented in the six downtown townships were successful, then it would be implemented for the rest of the city.

A trader working in the city, U Kaung Satt Naing, believes the system can reduce problems between vehicle owners and property owners. “It’s a big problem for us in Yangon and we hope the system can help reduce the problems,” he added.

YCDC member Daw Mi Mi Thwe said the new system has the potential to curb people parking indiscriminately especially if the fee-collection for parking is enforced.

Of the more than one million registered vehicles in the country, some 600,000 are registered in Yangon.
