Mandalay gems mart to open at night

Mandalay city officials will extend the trading hours at Mahar Aung Myay gems market until 11pm, a city official said.

U Kyaw Zaw Aung, a member of the Mandalay City Development Committee (MCDC), said the city will extend the trading hours to 11pm from the current 6pm.

The move is aimed at helping the hundreds of gems traders and brokers at the biggest market in Mandalay city, he said.

“Allowing the market to stay open until about 11pm will provide more job opportunities and convenience for small dealers,” U Kyaw Zaw Aung said. “They will be able to try to sell until night if they do not succeed in the morning.”

The extended trading hours are expected to start next month, U Kyaw Zaw Aung said. The city mayor has approved the plan and the MCDC is waiting for the approval of the regional government.

“We will start allowing foreigners night-time entry because it is a jade trading centre for China and India,” he said.

The city will supply more electricity to the area and beef up security to protect traders and customers.

Ko Kyaw Soe, a local gems trader, expressed doubt that the move would boost trading at the market because people could not get good prices for their gems.

“The market has many visitors in the morning but only a few in the afternoon. The main problem is not being able to get a good price. People don’t want to pay the original purchase price, so business is not good,” he said.
