Ministry to look into Mandalay University food court project

The Ministry of Education has sent a team to Mandalay University to investigate the allegations by students of irregularities in a project to build a food court on the campus that is nearly completed.

The three-member team, which arrived in Mandalay on Saturday, is led by Deputy Minister U Win Maw Tun, who said they will inspect the project as demanded by the students who began protesting last week to denounce the project.

“[The students] trust the inspection team,” he said. “It is a departmental inspection, and we will conduct it in line with the law.”

The team will look into complaints that Daw Thida Win, rector of the university, awarded the contract for the project to a businessman friend in violation of bidding rules and the directives of Myanmar President U Win Myint.

The team will submit its findings to the ministry by September 16, U Win Maw Tun said.

Students have been protesting in front of the university’s main building since last Monday, carrying placards and banners calling for action against the university administration board for violating bidding rules and the president’s directives.

Ma Yamin Thu, president of the Mandalay Student Union, said that while they trust the investigation team, the students will continue to protest until the team concludes its investigation.

“We have five students who would testify. The protest camp will stay until our demands are met,” Ma Yamin Thu said.
