YCDC launches stray-dog clearance operations in four townships

The Yangon City Development Committee (YCDC) is conducting stray dog clearance operations in four townships as a pilot project once a week, said U Min Aung from the Livestock Breeding and Veterinary Department.

The project is being carried out in Lanmadaw, Latha, Kyauktada and Pabedan townships and they expect that these townships will be free of stray dogs, he said.

“Currently, we are carrying out the project in a steadfast manner. There will be no more stray dogs in these four townships. If the people from other townships request us to clear dogs there too, we will,” he said.

The captured stray dogs from these four townships will be sent to the Thabawas Tayar Yeik Thar dog pound in Hlaing Tharyar Township where about 50 stray dogs are sent per week, said YCDC.

After the dog clearing operation has been carried out in the four downtown townships of Yangon, we will move to Dagon, Alone, Sanchaung and Kyeemyindaing townships. Pazundaung and Botahtaung will also follow, he said.

The number of strays in Yangon is estimated to be about 150,000, although there has been no accurate data collected, according to the YCDC.

The municipal committee has estimated that the cost of clearing the strays will be over K1 billion.

There are about 200,000 strays in the whole Yangon Region, with only about 6000 dogs registered as pets, according to the statistics from the Livestock Breeding and Veterinary Department.
