Actor appointed tourism ambassador to Thailand

Top Myanmar model and actor Paing Takhon has been named the country’s tourism ambassador to Thailand by the Myanmar Tourism Marketing Association.

Paing Takhon, who has a strong fan base in Thailand, and representatives of the association signed the deal in Yangon on Saturday.

The association expects Paing Takhon to attract more Thai visitors to Myanmar, as his movies are popular among Thais.

‘’We have already many Thai tourists in Myanmar,” said U Ye Naing, a tour guide in Yangon. “But with Paing Thakon as tourism ambassador to Thailand, we would be able to attract more.”

According to the Ministry of Hotels and Tourism, over 270,000 Thais visited the country in 2017, and 290,000 in 2018. He said Thai tourists comprised 20 percent of the total number of visitors from Asian countries.

Thai tourists in Myanmar visited Yangon, Bago, Bagan, and Mon State. Their favourite destinations included Botahtaung Pagoda, which holds a relic of Buddha’s hair.

The ministry said 1.2 million foreigners visited the country through August this year, 39pc more than the same period last year.

While tourists from China, South Korea and Japan, who enjoy visa exemptions, increased through August this year, the number of tourists from Thailand declined by 9pc in the same period.

To attract more Asian visitors, the Ministry of Labour, Immigration and Population relaxed visa regulations for visitors from Japan, South Korea, Hong Kong and Macau, and granted visas-on-arrival to mainland Chinese visitors on October 1 last year.
