Mandalay city wins international award

The Mandalay City Development Committee (MCDC) has won an international award for its efforts to implement reforms improve its efficiency in delivering basic public services.

The Singapore-based GovInsider, an advocacy group on good and innovative governance, chose the MCDC as this year’s recipient of its Rising Star Award for the governance reforms and innovations it carried out in the past, said MCDC member U Kyaw San Myint.

“The award ceremony was held in Thailand’s UN Conference Centre last week,” he said. “It was jointly organised by GovInsider Innovation Award and United Nations Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific.”

“Winning this award means our responsibility is bigger, and we have to work more,” U Kyaw Saw Myint added.

This was the fifth international citation that Mandalay received this year, including the smart city award and the Citizen of Burma award, among others.

Mandalay residents said that among the changes in the city since the new government took over in 2016 are better roads, street lighting, traffic control, and drainage systems.

Mandalay’s mayor vowed to continue reforms in the city to improve people’s lives.

“We will try our best to bring more development to Mandalay city,” he said.
