Myanmar’s Yangon International Airport (YIA) welcomed its six millionth passenger of the year – a family of three – with gifts of K1 million (US$665) in cash and other valuables on Friday.
Ameeramsa Musthafa and his family were cheered by airport staff, headed by the chairman of the airport coordination committee, representatives of Yangon Aerodrome Co Ltd (YACL), which operates the airport, and IndiGo Airlines, which operated their flight.
Musthafa and family arrived from Kolkata aboard IndiGo Airlines flight 6E 1398.
“YACL is delighted to welcome the six millionth passenger, who arrived on Friday at YIA onboard IndiGo Airlines,” said Jose Angeja, chief operating officer of YACL. “With 2020 just around the corner, we are also happy to announce that in a couple of days, the airport will break another record in the number of passengers processed.”
He was referring to last year’s record of 6.035 million passengers.
YIA serves 37 international airlines connecting to 37 destinations in 14 countries. The airport’s passenger traffic has grown 8 percent so far this year, compared to the same period last year, driven by new international routes.
The Ministry of Hotels and Tourism recently said that from January through September, more than 1.3 million foreign tourists visited Myanmar – an increase of 390,000, or 41 percent, compared to the same period last year.
