Annual Pyin Oo Lwin festival to feature flowers from three European countries

This year’s Pyin Oo Lwin flower festival will feature flowers from the Netherlands, the United Kingdom and Italy, as well as from Myanmar, the organisers said.

The festival, a major tourist attraction in Mandalay Region, will be held from December 15 to January 15 at the town’s National Kandawgyi Garden, said Ko Wai Myo Aung, who is in charge of the garden.

The Netherlands Flower Culture group will showcase tulips, which the Dutch are famous for, while the UK Flower Culture group will display roses, and the Italy Flower Culture group will show lilies. The Amazing Sunflower Maze will represent Myanmar.

Dutch experts will help with the floral displays, which will include 60,000 sunflowers, 65,000 tulips, 90,000 roses and 9000 lilies – about 370,000 flowers in all – including about 30 species from China and Thailand, and another 30 local species.

“There are challenges in taking care of flowers, especially foreign ones,” Ko Wai Myo Aung said. “As we are going to display mainly winter flowering plants during the festival, they can be damaged if it rains, so we have to grow flowers in reserve to replace any that are ruined.”

Ko Wai Myo Aung said the festival aims to help the public appreciate nature and the environment, as well as boost tourism in Pyin Oo Lwin and Mandalay.

More than K500 million (US$331,000) has been spent on the festival.
