Yangon draws up plan for restaurants in public parks

Yangon city plans to invite businesses to bid on opening restaurants in parks that offer food at reasonable prices, Yangon Mayor Maung Maung Soe said in a press briefing.

“If the hluttaw approves the plan, we will choose these restaurants in a transparent process,” he said.

The city will allow the restaurants based on location and feasibility. After approval by the Yangon Region government and hluttaw, tenders will be called for the restaurants, U Maung Maung Soe said.

The Yangon City Development Committee said there are 61 public parks in the city.

A grilled-fish vendor at a park in North Okkalapa township, said, “To ensure reasonable prices, the rent for the restaurants must be affordable, but they may be high because of the tender system.”

The YCDC plans to upgrade city parks, including by improving the quality of street food for sale.
