Yangon to Cancel Self-help Electrification Programs

All self-help electrification programs in Yangon Region will be canceled, given that the regional government is carrying out its plan to provide electricity access to all villages, according to Yangon Chief Minister U Phyo Min Thein.

“Village electrification committees are working for their own influence and power. We found out that some of the committees are not using funds effectively. Therefore, we have decided to cancel self-help electrification plans,” the chief minister said at the inaugural ceremony for the 33/11 KV power substation near Kamar Kalote Village and Karen Chaung Village.
Some of the power cables built under self-help electrification programs have been found lacking in quality requiring the regional government to replace them.

After the self-help programs are scrapped, local residents will not be required to pay for power cables or power stations as the Yangon Electricity Supply Corporation (YESC) will assume responsibility for all of them.

The regional government is carrying out construction of seven power substations, started during fiscal 2018-2019, to remedy power loss and shortages. The substation just opened near Kamar Kalote Village is one of the seven. It will help YESC provide stable and reliable power supply, boosting the education, health and socio-economic conditions of people from nearby villages.

“Before, electricity had to travel a long way from the power grid, causing power losses and faults,” said U Win Khaing, Union Minister of Electricity and Energy. “That’s why we built this power station.”

Thanks to the new substation, 726 households in five villages in Kyauk Tan Township will have access to electricity starting this year.
