China works with Mandalay Region on coronavirus

China is working closely with the Mandalay government to prevent an outbreak of 2019-nCoV coronavirus in the region, which has a sizeable number of Chinese traders, a Chinese diplomat told a briefing on Tuesday.

Ms. Li Libei, China’s acting consul-general in Myanmar, said they are conducting checks on Chinese citizens in Mandalay to prevent an outbreak of the virus.

The region has many social and economic links with China, Li Libei told the briefing. “We are conducting preventative measures with the regional government,” she said. “We haven’t found any Chinese with coronavirus in Mandalay yet.”

She said China has locked down several towns and cities where there are widespread cases of the virus, which has killed 1016 people and infected tens of thousands.

She added that Beijing is restricting the movements of people and canceling public events to contain the virus, which has spread to 25 countries around the world.

Li Libei said China is ready to evacuate any of its citizens stranded in the country.

“No group tours are left, but independent travelers may still be in the country,” she said. “We will help them to return. They just need to inform the consulate.”

Mandalay Mayor U Ye Lwin said regional medical officials are monitoring three suspected cases of the virus, which was first detected in China’s Hubei province in December.

“The three have been admitted to hospital,” he said. “We have sent the blood samples of two of them for testing. The last one was confined only (Monday).”

The patients, who are quarantined at Mandalay General Hospital, include two Chinese nationals and one Myanmar woman who visited China recently, the Ministry of Health and Sports said.

Myanmar has not recorded any coronavirus cases so far. The government has stepped up surveillance and screening at all ports of entry in the country, especially the more than 20 border crossings along the 1200-kilometer-long Myanmar-China border.
