State Counsellor says COVID-19 is hurting Myanmar economy

State Counsellor Daw Aung San Suu Kyi on Tuesday said that Myanmar’s economy is suffering from the fallout of the COVID-19 outbreak that has already spread to over 100 countries.

She cautioned the public that although the Health Ministry has not found any cases of the deadly disease in the country, it is hard to tell whether the virus is here.

She said border trade with neighbouring China, where the outbreak began on December 31, has been declining.

“We can’t deny that decreasing border trade has affected our country’s economy, but we have made arrangements to offset the damage,” she told people in Pyin Oo Lwin city in Mandalay Region.

“We are observing the situation closely and trying to overcome the healthcare, economic, social and international challenges with the power of the people,” she added.

She said a team led by the minister of International Relations has been set up to mitigate the problems caused by COVID-19.

She urged people to strictly follow the instructions of the Health Ministry in order to contain the possible spread of the virus in the country.

Starkly illustrating the global east-to-west spread of the new coronavirus, Italy began an extraordinary, sweeping nationwide travel ban on Tuesday, while in China, the diminishing threat prompted President Xi Jinping to declare during a visit to the city at the epicentre of the outbreak: “We will certainly defeat this epidemic.”

Xi’s trip to Wuhan – his first since the start of the outbreak – was the latest sign that China is edging back toward normal after weeks of extreme quarantine measures to fight the virus.

China reported just 19 new infections on Tuesday, down from thousands each day last month.

World Health Organization chief Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus said Monday that “the threat of a pandemic has become very real.” – Additional reporting by Associated Press
