Myanmar quarantines over 100 Chinese in virus clampdown

Officials have quarantined more than 100 unregistered Chinese nationals in Thingangyun township in Yangon Region as the country scrambles to prevent an outbreak of the deadly COVID-19 virus.

The Chinese were caught Saturday living illegally in two houses in Yangon Thit ward of the township, according to U Shwe Hla Win, a Pyithu Hluttaw (Lower House) MP for Thingangyun, he said.

A team headed by the Minister of Labour, Immigration and Population is investigating, and the Chinese will face legal action, he added.

An initial investigation showed they mostly came from Yunnan province and arrived in Yangon from March 12-20 to operate One By One online shopping and a software company called Fresh Wave Business Service.

U Myo Tun, administrator of Yangon Thit, said only 32 of the 118 Chinese citizens were registered at the township Immigration Office.

The raids were prompted by complaints by residents who were worried that the foreigners could be carrying COVID-19, which has killed over 13,400 people in 169 countries.

The resident complained that the foreigners were staying in the houses illegally, U Myo Tun said.

“When we arrived at the houses, the lights were turned off and everyone was hiding,” he said. “We found large rooms with bunk beds and some phone servicing tools. We also found many empty beer bottles.”

The property had been leased by an ethnic Kayin and a Myanmar national, who was said to be the manager of the business.

“There are two parts to this. The first part is for the Department of Immigration to investigate, and the second part is for the Myanmar Investment Commission to make a more detailed investigation,” U Shwe Hla Win said.
