Mandalay sets aside hotels for quarantine cases

The Myanmar Tourism Association has made arrangements with three hotels in Mandalay to accommodate citizens returning from aboard who have to be quarantined for 14 days, an official of the association said.

U Thant Zaw, the association’s secretary in Mandalay, said nationals have the option to quarantine themselves in the hotels or stay in the government-run Kandaw Nadi Hospital.

He added, “They will have to pay a nominal charge if they choose to stay at the hotel. It won’t be free, but it won’t be as much as a stay at the Nadi Myanmar hotel.”

Thirteen Myanmar citizens have returned from France, Britain, and Switzerland since the outbreak began. Four of them are quarantined at the Nadi Myanmar Hotel and the other nine at other hotels.

Last Thursday, karaoke bars, restaurants and other night-time entertainment venues went dark in Mandalay as the country’s second largest city joined the effort to prevent an outbreak of COVID-19 disease here.

U Zarni Aung, the region’s chief minister, told the regional parliament that the order to shut down night spots applied to the whole region. He did not say when the ban would be lifted.

Hospitals in Mandalay were told recently not to accept patients from other areas who are suspected to have the disease, in order to prevent its spread to the city.

Mandalay has over six million people, an estimated 40 percent of whom are Chinese migrants from Yunnan and Sichuan provinces. – Translated
