Mandalay’s Maha Aung Myay gems trading centre, which attracts many Chinese traders, will not shut down despite the threat of COVID-19 infection, its management said.
U Myo Myint Naing, secretary of the centre’s committee, said it would only shut down if ordered to by the government.
“Traders don’t want it to close because people live on the money they earn here,” he said. “The regional government hasn’t ordered it to close, but we will if ordered to,” he added.
U Myo Myint Naing said the centre had instituted checks on people entering the facility at its four entrances. “The centre gives customers temperature scans, hand sanitiser, and face masks for free,” he said. “We have 22 infrared thermometers,” he added.
“Many people in Mandalay work in the gems business, not counting the family members who rely on these people,” said Ko Wai Yan, one of the traders. “If we close the centre, ordinary workers and their families will be affected.
The number of people using the centre has fallen by about one third since the COVID-19 outbreak began. – Translated
