Myanmar stops sending workers abroad

The government has directed all overseas employment agencies to stop processing applications for people seeking to work abroad starting on Wednesday, said the Myanmar Overseas Employment Agencies Federation.

U Sai Sithu, head of information at the federation, said the Ministry of Labour, Immigration and Population issued the directive on Tuesday as part of the effort to fight the COVID-19 pandemic, which has spread to 155 countries.

The ministry said language classes and skills training will be suspended at schools in North Dagon township, which are attended by more than 500 people hoping to qualify for jobs in Malaysia, Thailand, Japan and South Korea.

U Sai Sithu said, “If we suspend labour exports for one month, we will stop 20,000 workers from going to Thailand and about 10,000 more to other countries.”

“However, illegal brokers and human traffickers may try to take advantage of these workers,” he warned, “so I urge workers to avoid these people, to be patient, and take care of their health until we can resume processing applications for overseas work.”

After the World Health Organization (WHO) declared COVID-19 a pandemic on March 11, the Myanmar’s President’s Office ordered the postponement of all large public gatherings on March 13.

Starting on Wednesday, overseas employment agencies in Yangon, Hpa-an and Myawady in Kayin State, and Kawthoung in Tanintharyi Region will no longer be able to issue employment contracts, and overseas employment identity cards will longer be issued in Yangon, Myawady, and Kawthoung.

U Sai Sithu said he hoped the ban will not last long.

The ministry directive will be sent to Myanmar labour attaché offices in Thailand, Malaysia, and South Korea, the department of labour in Kayin State, migrant workers offices in Myawady and Kawthoung, the migrant workers department in North Dagon, and all officials who issue worker identity cards. – Translated
