The Myanmar Press Council has threatened to publicly name the people behind social media pages that intentionally spread fake news.
U Kyaw Swa Min, secretary of the council, said some social media pages and accounts try to cause public panic by spreading fake news.
“We have no power to take action against these social media pages and accounts under the law, but we will call out their fake news about COVID-19 as a warning,” he said.
“If they ignore the warning, we will publicly expose the names behind these pages and accounts,” he added.
U Kyaw Swa Min urged the public to rely only on the announcements of the Ministry of Health and other government agencies for information about the deadly disease, which has killed over 34,800 people and sickened over 735,000 around the world. More than 156,000 people have recovered from the disease. – Translated
