Yangon International Airport gets fewer tourists in 2020 Q1

The number of tourist arrivals via Yangon International Airport (YIA) dropped by 26.2 per cent in the first three months of 2020 compared to the same period of last year, YIA said in its announcement.
Yangon International Airport, which is the main entry and exit gate for airway travellers, has provided services to 1.46 million tourists in the first three months of 2020. With the restrictions imposed upon the travelling around the world because of coronavirus disease, the civil aviation sector worldwide is encountering challenges.

The number of tourists declined to 883,194 from 1,196,042 in the first three months of 2020, a decrease of 26.2 per cent compared to the same period of 2019. However, the number of local travellers has risen to 572,656 from 560,978 this year, an increase of 2.1 per cent, according to the figure released by YIA.

In 2020 Q1, the flights provide service for 18,949 routes, an increase of 3.96 per cent in the same period of 2019.
With the spreading of the coronavirus infection, the Department of Civil Aviation (DCA) has suspended all passenger airlines operations at Yangon International Airport from 30 March to 30 April. However, some cargo and rescue flights are still under operation.
According to the DCA notification, the suspension upon all airlines operation at Yangon International Airport has been further extended up to 15 May 2020.

In order to continue effectively containing the spread of coronavirus disease in Myanmar, the National Central Committee for Prevention, Control, and Treatment of Covid-19 have decided to further extend the effective period of the Temporary Measures up to 15 May 2020 by its notification issued on 24 April 2020.

Preventative measures are also being taken to prevent coronavirus infection at Yangon International Airport. The sky link connecting the airport buildings, airport parking, and gates between Terminal 1 and Terminal 3 are temporarily closed while disinfecting measures are being carried out. —Aye Maung (Translated by Hay Mar)
