Owned by Siam Makro from Thailand, the first Makro Store has opened up in Mingalar Taung Nyunt Township in Yangon, and has a sales area of more than 7,000 square meters, selling over 10,000 different types of fresh food, dry food, and non-food assortments.
“Makro always aims to be the number one trusted partner for your business”, its slogan claims.
“Makro was big, huge. We had to book one day in advance to actually go there. There are more local products now than from Thailand. Everyone was wearing a mask when we went there. There are social distancing activities among the queuing at the entrance and each cashier”, one of the buyers said to Myanmore about her experience.

“Bring your own shopping bags. There is no plastic bag given inside the mart. For your comfort, you can bring the troller kart to your car”, a female Facebook user posted on her timeline.
On social media, a netizen posted pictures of people queuing on the way to enter Makro at the entrance and it went viral.
With Makro’s high popularity it is clear Yangonites crave a new experience of shopping at retail malls such as those like Walmart in the United States.
Marko is now open with no booking needed but has a limit of 250 customers at one time as a precaution to active social distancing for now.
