Rollout of the Yangon Payment System (YPS) on the city’s buses will resume at the end of June, according to the tender-winning company Asia Starmar Transport Intelligent.
YPS card system technology has already been installed on nearly 2,000 buses, and if pilot testing proves successful pre-paid cards will be sold at convenience stores.
“We’re preparing to resume the rollout at the end of the month. A total of 2,000 buses have been equipped with the new technology, with a further 500 machines waiting to be delivered. Under our plan, we aim to install machines on 4,000 buses,” said a company official on June 10.
Asia Starmar Transport Intelligent expects to complete the card payment system in Yangon by the end of the year.
“The whole system should be operational at the end of the year,” said YRTA’s joint secretary U Hla Aung.
A total of 100,000 cards, each with an initial base value of K1,000, will issued during the launch, Region Minister for Kayin Ethinc People Naw Pan Thinzar Myo said .
YBS buses transported around 1.8 -2.5 million passengers around the city before the pandemic, but the number of passengers declined rapidly at the end of March to just 100,000. In June, the number of passenger climbed up again to 500,000. – Translated
