Taunggyi to conduct first Covid-19 test in August

The first laboratory test for COVID-19 using Real Time RT-PCR in Taunggyi, Shan State, will take place in the first week of August after a month’s delay,
according to a spokesperson of the Ministry of Health and Sports.

“Both equipment and place are ready. Testing will start in the first week of August,” said director Dr Than Naing Soe
The first COVID-19 laboratory test was initially scheduled to take place in the first week of July in Taunggyi. Now, with Real Time RT-PCR technology –
recognised as the gold standard for COVID-19 testing – it is expected to test around 300 samples per day. “Our testing capacity will increase continuously,” said Dr Than Naing Soe.In Myanmar, COVID-19 tests are being carried out at the National Health Laboratory (NHL) in Yangon, the No 2 Military 100-bed hospital in Nay Pyi Taw as well as at two Public Health Laboratories (PHL) in Mandalay and Mawlamyine. At the Yangon lab, a Swiss machine donated by AA Medical Group commenced testing since May 1.

The NHL in Yangon tests an average of over 1100 samples, including over 600 samples from the Swiss machine daily.
The Mandalay PHL started testing on June 1 and the Mawlamyine Public Health Laboratory started testing on June 4. So far, the Mandalay PHL tested an estimate
of over 200 samples daily and Mawlamyine lab tested over 100 per day.

Currently, nearly 2,000 laboratory tests are carried out daily across the country. Until July 29, about 115,000 laboratory tests were conducted and 293 out of 351
confirmed cases tested negative, and 278 of them were allowed to leave the hospital. Myanmar has reported six deaths from the COVID-19 so far. – Translated
