Kyaukphyu Airport to receive funds for repairs, upgrades

The government has allocated funds towards repairing and upgrading the Kyaukphyu Airport in Rakhine State, said U Kyaw Myo, deputy minister of Transport and Communications.U Kyaw Myo revealed that more than K500 million in state funds has been submitted for the development of Kyaukphyu Airport in fiscal 2020-2021.
The minister was responding to questions raised in the Amyotha Hluttaw by Daw Htu May, MP of Rakhine State on July 28. Daw Htu May said she had submitted a proposal for the upgrade with the aim of improving tourism in the region, facilitating the logistics for Rakhine’s fisheries products and attracting more international investment.
She said the airport in its current state does not meet modern standards for passenger travel.

Once approved, the ministry will allocate K400 million to repair and extend the airport runway from 2500 feet to 7500 feet, U Kyaw Myo said. An additional K100 million to expand the airport terminal allowing it to accommodate two ART-72 aircraft at the same time has also been proposed.

The Kyaukphyu Airport was constructed during World War II. It was last upgraded between 2008 and 2010, utilising some K1 billion in funds. If approved, the airport would be upgraded ahead of the development of the Kyaukphyu Special Economic Zone (SEZ), which will comprise an industrial zone and deepsea port once complete.
The SEZ is an important asset in the China-Myanmar Economic Corridor, which is part of China’s Belt and Road Initiative spanning several countries in Asia. It will also be an important connecting point for the high-speed Kunming-Muse-Mandalay-Kyaukphyu railway project.

This is all expected to raise the number of travelers to and from Kyaukphyu in the years ahead. As such, having a modern and functional airport in the township
would make sense. – Translated
