Rations for seven million people are being prepared in Yangon in the event that current preventive measures are inadequate to contain the spread of COVID-19 and stricter or further restrictions are needed in the region.
Preparations must be made to distribute food rations to households in Yangon if the current stay-home order is not successful in controlling the spread in Yangon, according to the National-Level Central Committee for Prevention, Control and Treatment of Coronavirus Disease 2019.
The committee instructed the Commerce Ministry to meet with representatives of relevant groups and agencies to organise rations for households across the 44 townships in Yangon.
Among those who attended the meeting were representatives from the Union of Myanmar Federation of Chambers of Commerce and Industry (UMFCCI) and associate organizations, Yangon Region Transport Authority (YRTA) and people from Bayintnaung Commodity Brokerage House.
Discussions included calculating the time to prepare, package and distribute adequate rations, as well as considering methods to ensure there would be no mass gatherings.
“During the discussion, we found that it is really difficult to package and distribute rations for 7 million people. There are also limitations in preventing crowds from gathering,” said Director U Min Min from Department of Trade.
Deputy Minister of Commerce U Aung Htoo said that aside from dry rations, fresh food such as vegetables need to be prepared to last for two weeks.
Yangon is currently on a semi-lockdown, allowing only one per household to leave the house each time, but public markets and groceries remain open, while restaurants provide take-away services.
As of September 23, the total number of cases in the country had surged to 6958, with Yangon accounting for two-thirds of the infections with 4720 cases.
There are over 6000 more people under investigation for being infected with the disease in various hospitals, and authorities are searching for more place to convert to temporary quarantine centres as the number of suspected and positive COVID-19 cases continue to rise.
