Yangon to distribute antigen test kits for COVID-19

The Ministry of Health and Sports is planning to use antigen test kits, which can give results within 20 to 30 minutes, to test for COVID-19 starting from September 29, said the ministry’s spokesperson U Than Naing Soe.

Myanmar is expecting to receive a total of 200,000 test kits from Korea, around half of which arrived on September 27. The rest will arrive by the end of September.

“We’ll give priority to patients under investigation with symptoms at hospitals. Second priority will be given to primary contacts. Those who show the symptoms should not treat themselves at home. They should come to the hospital as early as possible for the test,” he said.Antigen test kits are 95 percent accurate for positivity and 98pc for negativity.

“There will be many people who turn out to be negative once those kits are put to use. But, even though they test negative for the disease at the time of testing, they can still get infected within minutes if they go out without wearing any masks. So, people should be reminded of it,” he said.

The health ministry will announce details of daily tests and procedures.
